REGISTER OF BAPTISMS 1816
Mary is the third from the top and reads:-
Hastie : Mary-Lawful Daughter of John Hastie and Jean Muir in Drumalbon was born on the twenty fifth day of May Eighteen hundred and sixteen and Baptised on the twenty ninth day of the same month.
As an interesting aside, all baptismal candidates names are followed by “Lawful” except Stevenson : James-son of—–Draw your own conclusion.
It would appear Mary and James lived their whole lives in Moffat. James occupation is shown on his headstone as “flesher” which today would be a butcher.
The assumption here is that Mary died due to complications of childbirth as she passed on the 4th. September, 6 days prior to the infant George John.
Of their three known children, only Jane b1844 lived to adulthood, dying at age 53 on 3rd. April 1897 at Moffat where she was born.
John George was only 10 days old on 10th. September 1848 when he passed away.
Margaret b1844 died at Kennelhall, parish of Johnston(e) at age 15 on 5th. January 1859.
There are ample examples where records become confusing and here are a couple more. Carmichael appears twice on modern maps, once as a village and again as a farm. As the record of baptism shows Mary was baptised at Drumalbon (modern or possibly the correct spelling, Drumalbin) which appears to be another farm in the vicinity of Carmichael.
There is a parish of Johnstone in the shire or county of Dumfries but no modern record of any place named Kennelhall.
It would be doubtful but unknown if all the listed people are in fact interred here, and I am thankful to the person who erected this and other Headstones
